" I GOTTA GET TO WORK." Cue awkward rubbing of the back of his neck. "I... I really think I ought to go."

Midnight groaned and rubbed her face. "I think I ought to as well. I'm really sorry. I think that emerald fried his brain."

"...Noooooo, I think he's just attracted to you," Espio replied. "I already said I was making him jealous. Kind of hard to do that when there's nothing to be jealous about."

Midnight's lips pursed together and both eyes squeezed shut. " I knew that," she said barely above a whisper. "But that doesn't make how he's acting any less weird."

Espio's mouth scrunched. "Well... I'm sure it can't be easy to, er... have unrequitted love... I guess?" The chameleon made a laboured (but eventually successful) attempt to comfortably fold his arms. Why was he even trying to give advice about this? He barely knew either of the parties involved, and certainly didn't know the first thing about romance.

The bat shrugged. "He's a sweet guy and all, but he's more like a little brother. Anyway, I'm sorry for his behavior. He's never done that with any of my other male friends."

That makes me feel so special, Espio quickly thought with a roll of his eyes. " What a privilege."

"Well," Midi said with a grin, "You ARE kind of cute so I guess I can't really blame him for being jealous. Anyway," she glanced at the now closed door. "If you don't want to come inside I guess I could lift you back to the ground? I should ask Ray about putting in some stairs, thinking about it. You're welcome to hang out and relax though."

Pause. ... ...... .......... Still pausing. Claustrophobia and gravity aside, Espio gave her a more baffled expression than ever. "... Did... Did you just hit on me?"

Aaaand the bat's demeanor shifted. She quickly covered her mouth to hide her sheepish grin. "What? I'm just saying."

"........................................................." The chameleon shrugged. "Eh, just as well. I could probably bounce a ring off your ass, too." At the sound of a nearby pounding, Espio shielded his eyes and turned to the new commotion just a few trees away. And caught sight of a yellow furball. "...So by 'in the area' you apparently meant 'next door'. Separation anxiety much?"

And now she was blushing. Thankfully Ray provided her with cover. "... Eh. He's... weird," she said, still covering her mouth slightly. "He thinks this place is haunted, because of that emerald, and decided to move a couple trees away to avoid the curse or whatever. I just figured why waste a good treehouse." She paused, scratching sheepishly at her head. "Maaaaaybe we ought to take a walk or something. I need head back to my old place and get my stuff packed anyway."

" 'We'?" Espio couldn't stop himself from echoing. The chameleon glanced at his host with what looked like genuine surprise. "You want me to come with you?"

Still not completely over her embarrassment she shrugged and tried to hold a straight face as she spoke. "If you want to, I'm not gonna make you or anything. Unless maybe I could help with something...?" she motioned toward the chameleon's hands to emphasize what she meant.

Somewhat at a loss for words, Espio shrugged widely. "I, er, just... No I'm fine to go along, I just...." Awkward cheek scratch. "I just thought you didn't like me."

Though his mouth scrunched uncertainly, he eventually gave her a quick, "Thanks." Uncomfortable with the current situation, the ninja instead turned his focus on trying to get down from the treehouse. "Let's go. I'll help you pack."

Oh hurray, Midnight thought, this game again. Leaping off the deck the bat caught the air around her in her wings and hovered beside him. "You sure? I don't wanna burden you with your hands messed up. And I wasn't kidding about living in a cave."

"Don't worry about it." As down was easier than up in nearly any given situation, Espio managed to hop, drop, or slide his way from one branch to another independent of the bat's assistance. "I should at least try before deciding it's hopeless and I'm incapable, shouldn't I?"

"Well, it's your choice," Midnight shrugged, then began to lead Espio off. For a long moment after that she was quiet as the wandered along down a beaten trail, her mind pondering over something the chameleon had said earlier. Finally she spoke up; "Okay, I'm curious. What really happened to your hands?"

EVASIVE CHAMELEON IS EVASIVE. "I told you, I had a problem with my campfire," he mumbled, his eyes shifting aside.

Midnight's face twisted into a puzzled expression. Nosy bat is nosy. "Why... were you kicking campfire logs?"

The ninja sighed. He hadn't really intended to go into the details of this. "I wasn't. It was a brat that'd helped me out earlier. He was trying to prove to me that fighting dirty is always the better option." Espio idly rubbed his right temple. He didn't particularly want to relate more than that, but, knowing Midnight... "Look, remember the thing I mentioned about the waterfall? I sort of... lost my focus. I fell in the water, and only barely managed not to drown before I passed out from the cold. But the problem was that I DID faint before I fully got out of the water, so, I wasn't warming up... "Some kid found me, apparently more interested in my supplies than in me, but decided to pull me out anyway. Once I woke up and recovered, he got to questioning why I'm working so hard to reclaim my honor, so..." The chameleon shook his head. "It was stupid to take him on when I wasn't really back on my feet yet, but, I just... wanted to teach him a lesson." He paused to sigh. " But then, I do make bad decisions."

"Damn," the bat answered in response to the story. "I can't say I blame you for trying though. Sounds like that kid was a real ignorant jerk, huh?" she brought her arms down and smacked her fist into her palm. "I wouldn't mind trying to drill a little respect into someone like that myself. You know I once had a guy claim he could kick my ass just because he saw both Kill Bill movies and played violent video games?"

"Always an excellent basis on which to base one's skills," Espio replied, rolling his eyes. "Anyway, he took my bag in the end, but I don't really consider it a loss; I'd already told him he could have what he wanted out of it in thanks for pulling me out of the water. I just didn't expect he'd take everything. But in retrospect, he did try to rob my malletspace -- twice."

"Cripes, what an asshole," Midi commented with a shake of her head. "So, anyway, how long have you been training in martial arts anyway?"
