Beep...
Beep...
Beep...That would be the sound of a heart monitor, not particularly unusual, seeing how this was a hospital. This one happened to be connected to a ferret resting in a hospital bed. He looked to be a young man, either of legal age or just about to reach it. He was covered in various cuts and bruses, but despite this, he appeared to be resting peacefully, though whether he was truely feeling fine or if it was just from the medicine was hard to determine. On the end of his bed was a clipboard, containing a file about him: Patient is an unknown ferret of approximately 20 years of age found on the outskirts of Central City, struggling to keep upright and collapsing upon seeing the paramedics arrive. He remained concious while being brought in, frantically saying that he and his friends had been attacked by a gang and that he needed to go back for them. Morphine was administered to him to calm him down while searchers looked for the others he mentioned, but no one was found.
Patient suffers from multiple stab wounds and shows evidence of severe blunt trauma, particularly around the cranial area, suggesting possible mental injuries. Despite this, X-Rays show only minor fractures in the skull and ribs as well as a previous injury to the right leg that had long since healed, albiet slightly improperly. Regardless, it is unknown how far the patient had traveled before being rescued or how he was able to do so, short of simply saying he was running on pure adrenaline.Of course, this was all irrelivant to the patient at the moment. For now, he was quietly resting as the morphine slowly began to wear off. It was only a matter of time before he'd finally wake up again. Beep...

The beeping noise was not lost on the half asleep Carmen. She'd been put under right before the transport, to prevent her moving too much. She stirred in her wheeled bed, mumbling to herself as she woke. Her slightly glassy blue-green eyes took in the room. "Man... this place is a lot more swanky than Resort Clinic..." Her gaze flicked over to one rather unlucky ferret in the side of the room opposite. Looks like there was someone who had a far worse day than she did. His mother would be worried about him.

It wasn't long, though, before the room had a visitor... for Carmen. Skater walked in quietly, hospitals, the genuine kind, always making him a little nervous. Once in the room, and seeing Carmen was right there, he relaxed, sitting in a seat next to her bed. "Yo, chica." He grinned, before looking over at the ferret. "Whoa. What happened to him?"

She tilted her head very slightly, then shrugged. "Who knows. He sure looks like hell, though." Then she slumped back against the overly white hospital pillows and sighed, blowing her thick bangs upward. It smelled so strange in here- and her window seemed to be looking out on a roof of some kind. She already missed the beach. "...Wanna find that... furry jerk and... make him a rug." What she meant was "make a rug out of him" but her brain still felt a little fuzz covered thanks to the medication.

Skater understood what she meant, though, and knew she was just mad. And stoned out a little. "Like it'd be that easy to find him, chica. Just chill, and let your cranium patch itself up."

"... ... ... Nrgh... Mmph..." The ferret seemed to respond slightly to the sound of voices nearby. However, he still seemed to be far from able to make any intelligent replies, so his identity to the other two would continue to be a mystery. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Without bothering to wait for anything resembling a "come in", the door swung open, revealing a badger in a lab coat... Sucking on a lollipop. @hugh@ Hugh hated clinic duty. To be clear, it wasn't that he had anything against the paitents or that he felt that dealing with "simple" cases were below him. Heck, it was the fact that he was still at least helping someone that kept him from out-and-out rebeling. The problem was more two-fold: More time on clinic duty meant less time studying biomechanics, and the fact that the hospital straight-up forced him to do it under the guise of hospital policy. Funny how that perticular piece of "hospital policy" only seemed to be brought up whenever he ticked off one of the other doctors or higher-ups. Why, if he didn't know any better, he'd say they were just kicking him down here as punishment to get him out of their hair! ... Oh wait, that was the reason. Oh well, at least there was a few bright sides, like being able to swipe lollipops from the pediatrics area. So what if it didn't look very professional, he liked his lollipops, dangit. And this was how he entered the next room he was called to: With a sour apple lollipop hanging out of his mouth. He remained quiet for a moment, surveying everyone in the room. The sheet said that there were two people suffering combat injuries in there that, while stable, still required looking after. It didn't take much to figure out which two were the patients and which one was a visitor. He promptly began addressing the fossa. "... If you're feeling left out, I can conk you over the head, too." *twitch*And even the ferret seemed to register the doctor's rather... blunt sense of humor.

Cue a rather blank stare for a long moment at the badger, as one of his ears flicked quietly. After the moment passed though, the fossa responded, with a completely straight face. "I dunno, dude. I think I don't mind feelin left out."

Somehow, this was the funniest joke to Carmen. She burst into giggles, clapping her hands over her mouth. "My doctor is funny. That's funny." Gah, when was the stupid pain med going to wear off? "Can I go home now, doctor? I'm fine, I promise. Scout's honor." Of course she was never a scout, but...

@hugh@
"Trust me, if you're laughing at my jokes, then you are not fine."
Pulling out his clipboard, the badger began reading over his notes on the two patients again.
"So... You're Carmen, I take it? Unless, of course, you don't know your own name and the guy over there had horrible parents, but I'm going to assume the former. Tests show that you did, in fact, get a concussion due to multiple severe blows to the head."
He paused to look at her again.
"... I think even the tests we do for those on H.M.O. could've figured that one out. I guess we just felt like making your insurance company cry."

"I could'a told them that. . ." Carmen rolled her eyes, and the story came rambling out. "See, there was this puta, right? And he tried to rob my job, so I fought him, and he hit me in the head with the counter. Or the other way around. But.. it's okay. I kicked him in the cojones, so he won't be having any puta babies." Carmen grinned and nodded with a slight bit of pride. "Oh, and I headbutted him. Then he hit me with the floor. And now I'm here. Can I go home now?"

@hugh@
There was a slight pause from the badger as he took in the otter's story.
"... Odd, that sounds exactly like how we give vasectomies to patients without insurance."
Hugh then walked over and began examining Carmen carefully, taking notes about her body language and general appearance to try and determine if she was still suffering any side-effects from getting hit in the head. She was obviously not all there mentally, but that might have just been the medication she was put on.
"Anyway, I'm not exactly sure we want to release you back into the wild yet. We still need to determine if there were any long-term effects caused by you getting your head smashed repeatedly. Falling to the floor and convulsing in seizures in a public place without me around would... blow, to put it even more bluntly than I usually do."
He then turned and looked back at the fossa for a moment.
"And what's your story? Boyfriend? Is she getting knocked up at the same time as she's getting knocked out?"

-That- comment hadn't been expected at all. And while a great deal of responses could have come out of Skater at that moment, most of them variations on "No way, dude!"... he couldn't manage to verbalize any of them. Instead, his eyes more or less almost bugged out, and he got a -single- word out. "... what?" It didn't help that this came out almost as a squeak.

" Que? No, no, no-" Carmen, however, certainly could speak, and she had plenty to say. "Skater's just a friend, a friend! Me and him could never do.. do that, ew- I mean I know it's how babies are made, very natural and healthy process, but goodness! And I'm not a stupid girl anyway, I want to get famous, travel the world, and have a huge wedding before there are any babies at all!" All this was related at about 100 miles per hour from a beet-red otter who was suddenly a lot more awake. She was beginning to suspect that her doctor was somewhat insane.

@hugh@
Well, that answered that question. The doctor let out a rather stiff laugh.
"Yes, well, you'd be surprised how often I have to actually clarify that."
Seemingly satisfied with having given the couple a panic attack, he walked over to the still unconcious ferret and began to take notes on his vitals.

It took Skater a moment to register that Hugh had... sort of been kidding. Once he had though, he glanced at Hugh's back. "Freakin us out wasn't cool, dude."

"What he said." Carmen was still red in the face. She flopped back against her pillows, arms folded. He was just like her mother, who was convinced that Skater was her boyfriend and that they would someday be married. It was just too strange to think about.

Unaware of Carmen's thoughts, or her mother's, Skater sat down next to Carmen's bed, eying Hugh. That dude had a WEIRD sense of humor.

@hugh@ "Yes, but it made me laugh." Having finished taking his notes on the unconcious ferret, the badger looked at him inquisitively and... proceeded to poke him with his pen. "... ... ..." The ferret shifted around and let out a groan in response to the prodding, but he still remained asleep. @hugh@ "Hmm... Either this guy is a narcoleptic or the anesthethiologist shifted the decimal point over by one again."

Skater glanced down at Carmen again, then over at Hugh. This guy was the strangest doctor he'd ever met. Then there was the ferret guy. He looked like he'd been through worse that Carmen had, what was with him? Rather than voice that, though, he kept his eyes that direction as he spoke. "So... 'sides bein drugged up, how ya feelin, chica?"

"Wishing I could get out of this dumb bed, for one thing." Luckily it was only for one day. Any longer and Carmen may well be climbing out the windows. "If my mom wasn't showing up soon, I'd have to stage a jailbreak or something." She huffed, blowing her brown bangs out of her face. "...Could be worse, I guess." She followed Skater's gaze to the boy on the bed. "At least I'm awake and I've got someone looking after me."

@hugh@
"Please don't do that. You don't want to encourage the guys down in the psych ward."
Seemingly done with his examination of the unknown patient, he turned back to the otter.
"I'll need to run a few more tests, but so far, it looks like the abuse to your brain was relatively minor. We'll probably be able to let you go as early as tomorrow, but I'd still recommend taking it easy for the next few days. Just in case you, I dunno, break rocks with your head for a living or something."

"I'll try and be careful where I go diving." She was starting to like this doctor. At least he was paying attention and talking to her. And the jokes were really weird, but... hey, that meant he had a jovial nature, right? That was always good.

Skater though... was now stuck with the idea of Carmen trying to break a rock with her head. The only sign of this, though, was a small snicker.

"Good. I'll check up on you again later once I get a few more test results back. Try not to suffer more head trauma while I'm gone, okay?"
And with that, the doctor left the room.

"...what a weird guy. But I kinda like him." Carmen settled back against her pillows and sighed, shutting her eyes. "Hey, Skater? How about you help me stage an epic breakout? If I lie in this bed for another minute, I'm gonna lose my mind." @aqui@ "You will do no such thing, mija." Aquaren stood in the doorway with a strained smile. Her daughter seemed to be alright... if she was already asking to leave, then she'd be just fine. But still, she'd received one terrifying phone call that had set her on the next portal to Central City. She strode across the roof and carefully, gently hugged her daughter. "How are you feeling?" "Sort of funny. And I really want to go home. Otherwise, okay."

@aquaren@ Aquaren smiled at Skater, giving him a hug and a very maternal kiss on the forehead. "Thank you for taking care of her, Galen. I'm very grateful to you- you may have saved her life..." She turned back to her daughter, drawing herself up to her full height and looking suddenly stern. Quite suddenly there was a different woman in the room, one used to having her commands followed to the letter without question. "Carmen Nerissa Neptuna." Uh oh. Carmen gulped, politely averting her eyes from her mother's face. "Yes, ma'am." @aquaren@ "Once you are out of the hospital, I want you to be resting for at least two weeks. No surfing, and no Radical Gear." Carmen sighed and resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "It's Extreme Gear..." @aquaren@ "Whichever it is, you won't be doing it. I... I don't want you hurt again, do you understand?" She whirled on Skater, giving him the same militant gaze. "And you will not be sneaking her out of doors either, Galen." The stern veneer cracked slightly, and suddenly she again a worried, scared mother trying to guard her child. Aquaren knelt by her daughter's bedside and held her, as if she were a little girl much younger than she was. "...you scared me today, you know." Carmen sighed and lay her cheek against her mother's. "Yeah. I know. I'm sorry, mama."

Skater's eyes widened as that gaze was turned on him, and he nodded quickly, even giving an attempt at a salute. He never did do that right, but Aquaren had gotten her point across.

"... ... ... Ugh... My head..."If one were listening closely, they could hear the sound of the ferret in the other bed finally say something coherent. This was followed by his face twitching a little before his eyes slowly opened. However, this was quickly followed by him squinting them shut again, as the sudden bombardment of hospital lighting did not go over well with his dilated eyes. He slowly brought one hand up over his eyes to shield out the light as he opened them again. Despite this precaution, however, he could see very little: his vision was still very blured. "... Where... am I?..."

An ear swiveled towards the other occupied bed, and Skater turned, taking a step or two towards the ferret. "Yer in the hospital, bro, and ya look like you fought a weed whacker and lost."
