The lights suddenly went out.
Rush looked up in alarm. “What the--?”
BOOM. The building suddenly began shaking as a deep, super-low-frequency rumbling quaked through it. It was promptly accompanied by a cacophony of alarms and sirens that blared to life spontaneously throughout the area. Rush’s gyroscopes were able to compensate, luckily; he reached a hand out to steady his father so the sudden vibrations wouldn’t cause the canine professor to tumble headfirst into the hole in the floor.
"Attention, coolant safety systems have been compromised. Volcanic activity beyond controllable levels. Please evacuate immediately. This is not a drill. Repeat, this is not a drill."
Rush stared up at the tiny speaker in the ceiling that had issued the decree. “…That can’t be good.”
An explosion suddenly rocked the corridor as one of the walls behind the group caved outwards, shoved by an unstoppable force.
“WAHOO!” A massive mecha whooped in glee as it turned to fire off one of its rocket-propelled arms at something behind it. Simultaneously the corridor was raked with gunfire as bullets that had been aimed at the machine missed it and flew everywhere else.
“Get down!” Rush cried out, grabbing his father and dropping to the floor as projectiles whizzed over their heads.
“YOU CAN’T HARM ME!” The mechanically-filtered voice of a child cried out gleefully through the mecha’s speakers as the bullets pinged ineffectively off of its superior armor. “I’M AN ARM SLAVE SPECIALIST! LAMBDA DRIVER GOOOOOOO!” It leaped back through the hole it had created, taking the fight to its attackers.
A few seconds later a flash of electric blue became visible through the hole, followed by several more room-shaking explosions. A shockwave of hot, displaced air rushed through the room and over everyone, bowling over any souls still unfortunate enough to be standing.
Then silence descended…or relative silence, at least. The alarms were still going and that computerized voice was repeating its message of warning to all who could hear it. Oh, and the building was still rumbling in an ominous fashion. Neither the mecha nor its attackers were anywhere to be found, but the echoes of distant battle indicated it was still in the base.
Rush peeked out from behind his hands as the dust settled. He was wearing a very unamused expression that spoke volumes of what he thought about the current situation. Looking around, he checked the status of his comrades. “Is everybody okay? Dad, you all right?”
