Eggman grinned, crossing his arms and tapping one of them with a finger. "The accused will state his name and occupation to the court. In addition, he will enter a plea regarding the charges leveled against him, which, to save our honorable judge the trouble of reciting, are breaking and entering, assault, destruction of private property, and conspiracy to commit murder. This is correct, Your Honor?" Eggman bowed in a show of respect.

The judge looked quickly over the papers submitted to him, and gave a single, short nod. "That is correct, Prosecution. Proceed."

Jonas walked over and took a seat in the chair behind the witness stand. "Jonas Lans. I'm a general mechanic and repairman," he said, "and...not guilty."

"Witness. Rather, defendant. You will testify to the court regarding the day of the crime, and your actions on that date."

Eggman slammed a hand on his desk. "The video is irrelevent. Your testimony, if you please."

"Er, Mr. Eggman, I believe it is my job to be telling the witnesses what they should be doing..." The judge shook his head, almost rolling his eyes for a moment... "Now then. Witness, if you please... Testify about what Mr. Eggman just asked." Oh, taking the easy way out rather than repeating himself. Good work, there, Udgey.

Jonas sighed. Might as well get it over with. "All right...I got a call from Omega, asking for my help with something down at the docks. When I got there, he was waiting with Shadow the Hedgehog. You DO remember who that is, I assume?"

"Considering I mentioned him not more than an hour ago in this very courthouse, I would say so. Does the witness have some motive for calling my memory into question?" Eggman shook his head. "Perhaps he requires memory testing of his own."

Jonas just shrugged. "Just checking." "Anyhow, they wanted my help in locating Dr. Eggman, who they believed had a base just outside and beneath Station Square Harbor. So, naturally wanting to help out a friend, I got them a boat and we headed out to look for it, starting with the abandoned Egg Carrier. "However before we got there, we witnessed a robot similar in form to Metal Sonic lounding out of the water. Below we could see the location we were looking for, so Omega and Shadow disembarked and headed down to it. I couldn't directly follow them as I had to kitbash some scuba gear for myself before I could do so. By the time I had managed to dive after them, they had already left the entry area of the base."

"You say they 'left'? Can you be more specific?" A gleam appeared in Eggman's glasses. "Tell me where they went."

"The witness just testified that the parties were already gone when he'd arrived, so he can't know where they went! This testimony is supposed to be facts, not speculation!"

"Oh, but I think your client does know where they went. In fact, I would say he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt. Unless, of course..." Eggman stared at Jonas. "The defendant wishes to claim otherwise?"

"He would," Jonas replied. "I didn't know where they had gone, though the sounds of explosions did give me a general direction."

"They entered my base, right? And judging by your 'not guilty' plea, you would say that you did not follow them in. Correct?"

Jonas had to hold back a grin. He'd already figured he was screwed so he was at least going to have some fun with this while he had his say. "True, I entered, but I believe the charge was BREAKING and entering. I followed Shadow and Omega in, but it was them doing the breaking part from the sound of it."

The judge blinked as he listened to the testimony that was being given by Jonas. "Well, if that -was- the case... Then this court will be unable to find the defendant guilty of the charge! In fact, I'd say that the one who should be in that chair would be Shadow, not Mr. Jonas!" "Hm. Yes... I will admit that a charge of trespassing could be applicable at this time, with minor repercussions..." "Mr. Eggman. Your thoughts?"

"Perhaps Jonas was not involved in the actual breaking. I will concede to that, Your Honor. However, if you wish to try Shadow for this, I'm afraid you'll have to find him, first." Eggman smirked. "Very well. Assault. Destruction of private property. Conspiracy to commit murder. You are not yet cleared of these charges. Tell me, why exactly did Omega and Shadow wish to locate me?"

Jonas shrugged, "Don't know about Shadow. As you pointed out you'd probably have to find him and ask him. As for Omega, I think he had some abandonment issues he wanted to work out."

"Don't be dodgy. A witness testimony is no place for witticisms. Omega's intent was nothing less than murder, was it not?"

"Then... wouldn't that mean that Jonas was not the murder conspirator, but rather, this... Omega? If -that- is the case, then I'm afraid we can't go through with a charge of murder conspiracy for Mr. Jonas."

Eggman shook his head. "No, Your Honor. If you recall, Mr. Lans has stated that he wished to 'help his friend'. Whether he intended to do it himself, or simply allow Omega to do it, this makes him an accomplice! So, I ask again. Omega's intent was murder, was it not?"

"If you want to know this Omega's intent, subpoena him and bring him in to ask! Any testimony from my client about what Omega did or didn't say is hearsay, which is inadmissible evidence!"

"What are you saying?! We're attempting to ascertain the defendant's knowledge of Omega's motive! This is paramount. Tell me, Wright, how would we be able to learn what the defendant thought by asking Omega what his motive was? Hmm?"

"You didn't ask him what he thought, you asked him for a fact. Jonas Lans cannot know for a fact what Omega's motive was unless he overheard Omega say it, and testimony of what the defendent heard someone say is hearsay. Either rephrase your question, or move on!" Wright's eyes moved to the judge, apparently expecting his support.

The judge simply looked at Wright with those beady eyes of his, a serious expression upon his aged face. "I must say... What you have just said, Mr. Wright... would be -true-, if, of course... This Omega was the accused. However..." The judge shook his head. "... This is not the circumstance, and thusly, the word of Mr. Jonas will be good enough for this court. On the other side of the coin..." With this, he turned his head to look right at the prosecution. "The more I listen, the more I can't help but wonder if Mr. Jonas was brought along on this venture without the inkling that this Shadow and Omega were up to sinister motives. It seems this was only made apparent by the explosions after they had arrived. To Mr. Jonas... Perhaps he assumed they simply had business with you, Mr. Eggman? After all, the two other individuals in question -do- have former ties to your person."

Eggman gave a haughty smirk to Wright before addressing the judge. "That is what we are trying to ascertain. Granted, I doubt the witness will be entirely truthful, but we shall see."

The phoenix slumped slightly. While the judge did seem to have given him an inch, it seemed he'd only been given an inch. At least that was still something; he'd just have to be very careful about his next few moves. "Hey," Wright glared, "my client is innocent until proven guilty. Don't auto-assume he's a liar."

"Tsk tsk. Oh, Mr. Wright, how unprofessional of you to take it so personally. After all, it's the prosecution's job to doubt the accused!" Eggman smirked once again, before turning his attention back to Jonas, a glare sweeping over his face. "Witness. Testify as to the matter of Omega's motive, if you would be so kind."
